Bill Cunningham New York

Rated NR 84 minutes 2011

The title photographer invented the seen-on-the-street fashion photo essay with his New York Times column “On the Street,” and this delightful documentary shows us Bill’s world, from his bicycle-and-snapshot working style to his cubbyhole apartment at Carnegie Hall to the swank soirees of the likes of Anna Wintour and Tom Wolfe — among many talking heads who revere Cunningham’s dogged pursuit of beauty. At age eighty, the tireless chronicler works hours that would exhaust most younger men, but we get the impression that’s what he lives for. Exhilaratingly directed and shot by Richard Press. (84 min.)
