Blues, Folk, & Country

Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys

When: Sat., Aug. 13, 8 p.m. 2011

Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys headline an evening of roots music delivered by three acts that explore the outer limits of folk and Americana. Considered a pioneer of what we now call "Americana," Big Sandy blends rock, country, western swing, and rockabilly. Singer-songwriter Eilen Jewell's songs are tear-jerkers with deep emotional impact. Her latest album, Queen of the Minor Key, plays like the soundtrack from a Forties film noir. Seattle's Zoe Muth has the country soul of gals like Loretta Lynn and Iris Dement, and is equally at ease with honky-tonk rockers and tales of wrenching heartache. At Slim's (628 Divisidero, San Francisco) on Saturday Aug. 13. 8 p.m., $16.
