One side of Big Momma’s Kitchen is papered with a wall-length photo collage of professional athletes with Oakland roots; the other side with a who’s who of Oakland music. But for all of the restaurant’s Oakland paraphernalia, Big Momma’s Kitchen traces its culinary roots to New Orleans. The po’boys are the real deal: tender pieces of cornmeal-crusted basa fillet (or shrimp or oysters) and all the traditional po’boy toppings: lettuce, tomato, and pickles — plus pepperoncini, a tangy “secret sauce,” and melted American cheese. Big Momma’s also serves better-than-average versions of soul food standards, such as fried chicken and smothered turkey wings, but the single most delicious item on the menu is the aromatic, flavor-packed Louisiana-style shrimp rice.
