Big Eyes

Rated PG-13 106 minutes 2014

In the spirit of wised-up “lives of the artists” pics such as My Kid Could Paint That and Art School Confidential, Tim Burton’s tongue-in-cheek narrative profile of Margaret and Walter Keane –creators and aggressive marketers of those ubiquitously popular portraits of sad-mugged, enormous-eyed little children– has tons of satiric fun with notions of taste and fashion in pop culture. Actors Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz, as Margaret and Walter, catch the spirit and everything else follows, from period tunes and the zany San Francisco vibe in the '60s to barbs aimed at highfalutin critics and gallery owners who disdained Margaret’s work (she was the real artist, not her hustler salesman husband). Fits into the Burton filmography in the same obsessive corner where Ed Wood and Frankenweenie live. Hilarious screenplay by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (105 min.).
