Beyond J Geils, 7 Albums Later: Peter Wolf

When: Sat., Oct. 2, 8 p.m. 2010

One of the funkiest white boys this side of fellow BostonstringbeanSteven Tyler, Peter Wolf has a motor-mouth delivery and a varied palette, encompassing a broad array of American roots music. Such attributes made him an effective frontman for the J. Geils Band. While it would be easy to only remember them for their early MTV-driven hits "Centerfold" and "Freeze-Frame," Wolf and his crew dabbled in jump blues, reggae and funk at a time when most of their peers were stuck in a blues-rock rut. Since parting ways with his former outfit in 1983, Wolf has released several albums, briefly reunited with the band and even hit the road for a 2008 tour with fellow stylistic iconoclasts Kid Rock and Rev Run. With his recently released seventh album Midnight Souvenirs, Wolf continues to dig deep into the R&B, country, and blues of his youth, including a trio of stellar duets with Shelby Lynne, Neko Case and his idol, Merle Haggard. Although none of those three will be on-hand for this Bay Area appearance, expect Wolf to provide his de rigeur hyperkinetic and way-soulful delivery at Yoshi's San Francisco (1330 Fillmore St., San Francisco) on Saturday, October 2. 8 p.m..$27.50.
