Everything about Black Spring is low-key and understated. Owned by Ryan Stark, a musician and former Virgil of the Amoeba Music aisles in Berkeley, Black Spring is awash in natural light, lined with modest, spacious tables and revolving artwork, and anchored by a J-shaped counter. (The boldest feature, an espresso machine mounted on hydraulics, is necessary to accommodate Stark's stature.) Also, Black Spring offers delicious vegan pastries, withholds wi-fi, and is named after a Henry Miller book. Crucially, there are no signs stating any of these facts. Black Spring shows that it's more about being than being seen.
