Best Vegan Restaurant

Souley Vegan

One of the best meat-free eateries in the Bay Area prides itself on a cuisine that's typically anti-vegan. While at most soul food restaurants you can count on lard or bacon as staple ingredients in even the most innocuous sounding "vegetable dishes" like collard greens or baked beans, Souley Vegan has managed to make delicious veggie versions of all sorts of Southern staples. First-timers should try the $19 everything plate (usually more than enough for two people to eat), featuring a taste of the restaurant's best dishes, including fried tofu "catfish," fake mac and cheese, barbecued tofu, cornbread, and candied yams. And unlike a traditional, fat- and cholesterol-heavy soul food meal, you can completely gorge yourself and count on not feeling too gross afterwards. For the people who can give up meat but never booze, take your plate next door to Beer Revolution.
