Starting at 8:45 a.m. on the last Saturday of each month at the Berkeley Marina, Berkeley's Parks, Recreation & Waterfront Department offers free compost to Berkeley residents. This dark, rich compost is a vitamin-charged, super-soil generated entirely from the green waste and food scraps collected from the city's residents. Well-processed compost reeks only of sumptuous gardening possibilities and will provide a great base for your tomatoes should they ever grow after this year's record gray, damp, East Bay winter and spring. Get there early because the landscapers are legion. Bring your ID, shovel, and mode of transport. Worms are optional.
