Richmond Greenway

The Richmond Greenway, which runs through the infamous "Iron Triangle," is changing the area's reputation for crime and blight. Originally the property of Atchinson, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway, the stretch of land sat barren and unused for 25 years after it was deeded to the City of Richmond in the late 1970s. Today, carefully tended flower and vegetable beds, mosaic-encrusted benches, and brightly colored murals line a well-maintained walking and bicycling path. The area is not just a throughway but a gathering place for youth, families, and local workers. Community organizations maintain sections of the Greenway, and it draws residents from all over the city with events featuring live music and food booths several times a year. It's one of the most tangible examples of positive change pumping through the city of Richmond.
