.Best Urban Bird-Watching

Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline

Of course one of the Bay Area’s best bird-watching spots would be nestled squarely between the Oakland Airport and the Oakland Coliseum, with Highway 880 running alongside. Of course thousands of migrating birds should be able to find their way to a single fifty-acre marsh set amidst an unforgiving industrial tableau year after year. Who are we to question the ways of nature? In 1998, the Port of Oakland (from which the East Bay Regional Park District leases the land today) restored these rich San Leandro Bay wetlands by letting the tides back in, and ever since, various organizations have worked to reestablish native plants and a functioning ecosystem. Migratory birds have appreciated the effort, and today the park’s fifty-acre Arrowhead Marsh is a major stopover on the Pacific Flyway. Add to that the dozens of local species that make their home here and you’ve got a birder’s paradise with incredibly easy access.
