Total B.S.

Forget everything you think you know about Bob Seger. That was the lesson learned at the Uptown Nightclub on a recent Art Murmur evening — a free show brings everyone out, especially if they’re roaming the streets of Oakland anyhow, and no one cares who’s playing so long as the bartenders are quick. But on this night the crowd was in for something special: Total B.S. Including members of Drunk Horse, Howlin’ Rain, East Bay Grease, and others, this Bob Seger cover band has three big factors on its side: the 21st-century population’s ignorance of Seger’s extensive, expansive catalog; a deep love, respect, and understanding of said catalog; and Jason fucking Morgan, former Harold Ray Live in Concert (and current E.B. Grease) frontman, possibly the hardest working man in Bay Area rock ‘n’ roll. On the night in question, the five-year-old band took the audience completely by surprise. Murmurs of “Was Bob Seger this good in concert?” and “I guess I like Bob Seger” reverberated through the crowd between high-fives, dance moves, and the drunken holding-up of cell phones. Total B.S. strikes just the right balance between total cool and totally dorked-out fanaticism.
