This tiny broom closet of a bakery in Uptown Oakland is only open to the public for a few hours each Wednesday and Friday, and the first time you go, you’ll probably do a double take when you see the crowd of people lined up outside the inconspicuous basement door — dessert junkies lined up to get their fix. But you’ll likely become a regular yourself after one taste of dessert maestro Gregory Williams’ unique cheesecake creations: the lemony, crème brûlée-inspired Ugly Duckling, or the Oreo-crusted Best Milkshake. The texture of the cheesecakes is second to none — unbelievably smooth and creamy. And the bakery’s assortment of densely fruit-packed cobblers and still-warm-from-the-oven cookies is no slouch either. Put it this way: For those of us who try to watch our waistlines, it’s probably a good thing Gregory’s is only open twice a week.
