.Best Summer Day Camp for Kids

Camp Kee Tov

You may have seen kids walking around the East Bay sporting colorful T-shirts from Camp Kee Tov. After scratching your head about its meaning (kee tov means “because it’s good” in Hebrew), you should know this: The camp is simply awesome. Based at Congregation Beth El in Berkeley, the campers spend most of their days at rented spots in Tilden Park, playing Spud, getting drenched in goop on Messy Day, and singing their hearts out with their new best friends. What this camp is best known for is its spirit and its high-energy staff, led by its current director, Zach Landres-Schnur, a late-twentysomething sports writer-turned-camp-head-extraordinaire. One example: To make sure parents are up to date on when the buses leave camp to take children back to respective stops in Berkeley and Oakland, Landres-Schnur tweets the exact moment the buses leave so that parents don’t have to stand at the bus stop dumbfounded. Though this is a Jewish camp, you don’t have to be to attend. And, as an added bonus, Camp Kee Tov-ers will learn the joys of drinking fuzzy milk, a foamy liquid poured at great heights that was developed and branded at camp, and if you ask us, should be trademarked.
