.Best Sports Coach

Teri McKeever

Although female coaches broke through the glass ceiling years ago in basketball and other collegiate sports, US Olympic swimming has been stuck in the 1950s. But not any longer, thanks to UC Berkeley swim coach Teri McKeever. This year, after leading Cal to three NCAA championships in four years, she was named the first-ever female head coach of the women’s US Olympic swimming team. We know, it’s 2012, and that’s ridonkulous. Nonetheless, McKeever’s achievement is noteworthy. Moreover, her team could be one of the best ever assembled. Its stars include butterfly ace Dana Vollmer (one of McKeever’s disciples), breaststroke demon Rebecca Soni, and backstroke newcomer Missy Franklin. Even East Bay resident Natalie Coughlin, an eleven-time Olympic medalist who has been coached by McKeever for more than a decade, will be in London for at least one relay swim, as she attempts to become the most decorated female athlete in US Olympic history.
