You've heard of slow food, but what about slow fashion? Housed in a tiny shop in Alameda, The Sewing Room & Style Lounge sells lovingly (and, yes, slowly) handcrafted pieces by designer Desiree Salas. Retro charm oozes from every polka-dotted dress and floral-print blouse, but these designs are accessible enough to appeal to those outside of the rockabilly time-warp scene. And Salas isn't content to just produce and sell; spreading the gospel of producing women's clothing with an old-fashioned approach is woven into the Sewing Room & Style Lounge's organizational plan. The tiny floor space is equal parts showroom and classroom, with vintage sewing machines at the ready for the classes taught in the evenings. We recommend dropping in on a course or two, because, really, what better way to guarantee your threads weren't made in a sweatshop than by making them yourself?
