.Best Skate Crew

Unity

Unity, headquartered in a loft above E.M. Wolfman bookshop downtown, is a clubhouse, a print shop, a band, and a loose-knit skate collective. In Oakland, it’s become shorthand for an interdisciplinary crew of artists whose most prominent member is Jeffrey Cheung, a painter known for his ecstatic nudes. But its iteration as a queer skate team — one populated by people who’ve felt repelled by the homophobia and bro-ish homogeneity of skateboarding — has in the past year or so seized national attention in outlets such as The New York Times. Unity has now sponsored queer skate meet-ups on multiple continents, and Cheung has hand-painted more than a thousand, often-personalized skate decks.
