.Best Public Tennis Courts

San Pablo Park

On a sunny weekend afternoon in the East Bay, there’s nothing better than playing a game of tennis. But finding an open court — one that isn’t neglected, cracked, or covered in debris — can be challenging, resulting in a frustrating drive all over town as daylight slips away. But in a little-known (to outsiders) park in West Berkeley, there’s a tennis-player’s paradise: six courts — newly surfaced, with lights (!) and a large backboard — which are rarely full. A lot of money has gone into upgrading San Pablo Park in recent years, and it’s quite the multipurpose neighborhood hotspot; its basketball courts just reopened after a half-million-dollar renovation. The tennis courts sometimes hold tournaments and attract some serious players, but rookies hit the courts, too — and, thankfully, two of them are fenced in for those who tend to hit errant balls. After discovering these immaculate courts, you won’t want to go anyplace else — and you won’t need to, either.
