There are several good reasons to stop by the Kona Club, the tiki-style bar on Piedmont Avenue that replaced the late great Kings X a few years back. First, the location: Within walking distance of Mountain View Cemetery, the Chapel of the Chimes, St. Mary’s Cemetery, and the Oakland Columbarium, the Kona Club is a perfect spot to hoist a few in tribute after saying fond farewells to the dearly departed. Second, even if you aren’t in mourning or pondering other grave matters — even if you don’t care for tiki style — your spirits may be lifted into friendly, sophisticated conversation with the bartenders and locals who call the Kona their second living room. The Kona Club, one of the three bars owned by Doug Miller (along with Thalassa in Berkeley and The Mallard in Albany), offers a large menu of tiki drinks, along with a decently priced selection of single malt scotches. You should especially go late Saturday afternoon when, usually around 6 p.m., the wheeled eatery Jon’s Truck Eats sets up shop just outside the door. And, yes, you can take your order into the bar.
