Of all the trendy new restaurants to open in downtown Oakland, none have captured the imagination of the corporate power-players, tech-startup warriors, and assorted cubicle dwellers the way that Tribune Tavern has. What better place, then, to do some lunchtime wheeling and dealing, or to woo that hotshot "brogrammer" you're trying to poach away from some cross-town rival? The unabashedly meat-centric menu will sate any power-luncher's deep carnivorous cravings, with decadent versions of pub favorites like shepherd's pie and bangers and mash, and huge platters of French fries topped with carnitas-style pulled pork and a boozy "fondue" gravy. Almost all of the food is tasty, and the cocktails are carefully crafted. Meanwhile, the stylish, vintage-inspired dining room recalls the building's history as the longtime home of the Oakland Tribune, allowing diners to imagine themselves — romantically — as old-time, tough-talking, no-guff-taking newspaperfolk.
