For lower-income people curious about alternative health practices, the Healing Clinic Collective’s pop-up events offer a wide array of wellness services that might ordinarily be cost-prohibitive. Earlier this year, the organization hosted the Women’s Healing Clinic in West Oakland’s DeFremery Park. The event offered free treatments for women and trans people who gathered from all over the Bay Area to try acupuncture, Reiki, massage, spiritual counseling, and various types of pre-natal care — often for the first time. The collective has held similar events, including ones for male-identified people, in other underserved areas, such as East Oakland and Richmond. While a typical doctor’s visit may only address specific symptoms, the Healing Clinic Collective seeks to encourage holistic care that takes into account the ways that grief, trauma, and stress might impact a person’s physical, spiritual, and mental well-being.
