If you’re one of the millions of Americans who starts the day with The New York Times crossword, why not step it up a notch and join like-minded folks for a puzzling afternoon at the annual Bay Area Crossword Tournament in Alameda? For a modest entry fee (proceeds benefit the California Dictionary Project), you’ll get a chance to solve four yet-to-be-released crosswords provided by the Times’ crossword editor, Will Shortz, and to test your speed and accuracy against local wordsmiths. Five-time American Crossword Puzzle Tournament champion Tyler Hinman (one of the featured solvers in the 2006 documentary Wordplay) often participates in the September event as a judge, and you might just bump into the creator of one of your favorite puzzles; many of the “constructors” published regularly in The New York Times are Bay Area residents.
