.Best Place to Buy Beautiful Junk

Alameda Point Antiques and Collectibles Faire

If you like old, pretty things but don’t care for the musty smell and somber atmosphere one associates with the average antique store (or your grandmother’s attic), then the Alameda Point Antiques and Collectibles Faire is the place for you. On the first Sunday of every month, more than 800 sellers gather outdoors at the site formerly occupied by a naval air base to form what is easily the largest antiques and collectibles show in the Bay Area — and also the most festive. It’s like a small, bustling village where the hipsters and the senior citizen set join happily together to browse everything from beautifully seasoned cast-iron cookware to vintage maps to every kind of little trinket you can imagine (especially at the $1 tables, where you can jostle with all the other bargain hunters). Every item is guaranteed to be at least twenty years old. Hardcore collectors will fork over $15 to get first dibs on the best merchandise first thing in the morning, but more casual shoppers can show up anytime after 9 a.m., when the admission fee is a more modest $5. Don’t arrive too late, though, or you’ll miss out on all the best stuff!
