Smack dab in the middle of downtown, Lake Merritt naturally attracts lots of city dwellers. It's a classy place, thanks to gondola rides and the "Necklace of Lights" draped around the 3.4-mile shoreline. It also has the most options for scoping out date prospects, with flocks of people walking the loop around the lake, jogging, and flying kites. The park also includes large expanses of well-manicured grass, perfect for lying out while pretending to read some intellectual book (sure to make even the most uninformed look bright), or having a picnic after the weekly Grand Lake farmers' market. But, ultimately, Lake Merritt is a place for those wanting to get out and meet people — or just look.
