The East Bay's enduring monument to contemporary print media, Issues is teeming with magazines, journals, newspapers, zines, and books. That means it's a room brimming with ideas, criticism, and topical commentary — you know, otherwise known as hallmarks of civilization. With European tomes of fashion, consigned local fanzines, intellectual journals, and pop culture tabloids, Issues is an implicit argument for these things appearing on paper. And there's more: A selection of new and used books privileges small presses, marginal art collections, and memoirs of outlying cultural figures. Crucially, the employees and owners are likely to have something to say about each one. If they haven't read it personally, they've probably consulted a review in one of the shop's periodicals.
