Lacrosse

Stripped down for the new millennium, high schools need to make the most out of the least. With equipment costs overwhelming traditional sports, a sport that dates back longer than almost any other in the United States is poised for growth in the Bay Area. It’s lacrosse, and it’s coming your way. In the past, kids didn’t take part unless they did some time back East, but the newest league sport in the prep scene is starting to take off here. Much of its popularity stems from its appeal to sporting types leery of football’s high economic and physical toll. Once you’ve got a stick and some padding you are good to go on the pitch. Fast like soccer, but with more goals than a week’s worth of futbol games, the LAX scene rewards agility over bulk — another 21st-century kind of benefit. High schools are having harder times suiting up sufficient squads in many of the old guard sports. So maybe the leaner, greener sport of lacrosse can bring back that old school spirit.
