.Best New Coffee Shop

Local 123

The owners of Local 123 bet the farm when they opened this place a little more than a year ago. They chose a space as large as most chain cafes; decided to serve only a small, changing menu of locally sourced eatables; contracted East Bay artisans to create lamps and furnishings; and went all the way to Healdsburg to find Flying Goat, the roastery they felt would allow them to make the best coffee possible — because that, above all, was what mattered to them most. And it’s paid off. Sure, they now serve regional beer and wine on tap, screen movies, and host workshops in jamming and urban gardening. And their art curator should probably be working in a museum. But the coffee is still the star, the president, and the spoiled youngest child all rolled up in one. They filter-drip coffee by the cup, grind and hand-tamp espresso drinks to order, and cold-brew their iced coffee for 24 hours. And, if they’re not too busy, they’ll answer your coffee questions. Because they want you to love, understand, and appreciate coffee every bit as much as they do.
