Best Nail Polish Company

Floss Gloss

When California College of the Arts graduates Janine Lee and Aretha Sack saw a colorless void in the corporate nail polish market, they took matters into their own hands by starting Floss Gloss, an East Bay-manufactured line of opaque nail polishes, inspired by everything from party-induced bruises to peach-colored bikinis and gas station nacho cheese. Packaged in dainty bottles and topped with girlish golden handles, each $8 lacquer affords purchasers a funky, formaldehyde-free way to dress up their digits. And perhaps just as exciting as the local business’ products is its colorful creators, who have been setting up shop at local dive bars to paint nails during DJ sets. The duo recently brought their polish party to Oakland’s Layover, where they beautified patrons’ nails for $10 a pop or for free with a polish purchase. There’s talk of making the mobile manicures a monthly affair, which would certainly make the event the most inventive manicure in the East Bay.
