.Best Movie Theater for Non-Movie Events

The New Parkway

If you’ve only been going to the New Parkway to see movies, you’ve been missing out. With its comfy couches, cult-film showings, and food and drink options, it’s obvious why the recently revived theater has become the go-to spot for movie-watching in Oakland. But the Parkway also has a lot to offer in terms of non-movie related events. This summer, for example, the theater screened most of the World Cup matches, to sports fans’ delight. It also hosts trivia nights; the lecture series Nerd Nite; regular viewings of Mystery Science Theater 3000; screenings of television’s greatest reality show, RuPaul’s Drag Race; and a raucous sing-along event to R. Kelly’s rap opera Trapped in the Closet, which regularly draws a crowd of about one hundred people. And recently, it’s even started a monthly book club at which participants discuss books that have been turned into films.
