.Best #MeToo Moment

Boot & Shoe Service

The #MeToo movement hit home last winter when the San Francisco Chronicle revealed that more than 30 women employees had accused Oakland restaurateur Charlie Hallowell of sexual harassment over the course of more than 10 years. It was devastating to the local community, and in response, the management of Boot & Shoe Service threatened to quit if Hallowell didn’t divest from the company immediately. He didn’t, and true to their word, managers left. Their show of solidarity sent the message loud and clear: This community does not support employers who mistreat and harass their employees. A few months later, Hallowell ceded some ground and sold Boot & Shoe to former employee Jen Crenner and her partner Richard Clark. In recent weeks, Hallowell also sold Penrose to a former employee. What will happen to his remaining restaurant, Pizzaiolo, remains to be seen. In the meantime, support the employees of Boot & Shoe by enjoying a great meal there.
