Earlier this year, pornographer Courtney Trouble delivered the closing keynote speech at the Feminist Porn Conference in Toronto. It was a well-deserved honor. Trouble is a radical activist whose hardcore films feature queer, trans, plus-size, and minority performers. In addition to working with groups that the rest of the industry has more or less deemed "unsellable," Trouble's films are radical in that they attempt to depict genuine pleasure and showcase open communication during sex. In other words, she supports consent, and the idea that real sex is hot sex. Her works as a pornographer and performer are so excellent that they're increasingly attracting the attention of the mainstream porn industry, which nominated her for multiple industry awards this year. And her influence is far-reaching: Her films have been screened at festivals throughout North America Europe, Australia, and the Middle East. With Trouble at the helm of the scene, the East Bay has blossomed into the epicenter of queer and feminist pornography.
