Temescal Street Cinema

Tesmescal Street Cinema is one of those wonderfully Oakland creations. Started in 2008, the event offers free weekly screenings during the summer by different Bay Area filmmakers on the side of a building at 49th Street and Telegraph Avenue. Founders Catarina Negrine and Suzanne L’Heureux brought the idea to the Temescal Business Improvement District, and have since shown a variety of films ranging from DIY documentaries to hamster road trips. This year’s season, which ran from June 9 to July 14, featured films that explored topics including the poet Gary Snyder and a night of animated shorts. Plus there was free popcorn and opening performances by various Bay Area musicians. Oakland at its finest, indeed.
