.Best Local Act That Made It Big

Green Day

In 1994, the release of Dookie kicked off the band’s mainstream success, but before the glitz and glamour, Green Day was an East Bay punk sensation. Since then, the band has risen to international fame, sold millions of albums, and become a fixture on MTV, Rock Band, and the Billboard charts. In truth, you can’t get much bigger than Green Day. The band even has its own version of the game Rock Band, a privilege previously granted only to AC/DC and the Beatles. And yet, the band still keeps the East Bay in its heart. Last year, though it scheduled only one concert at the Fox Theater in downtown Oakland, the band ended up playing a second show there the next night, then moved the party across the street to the Uptown for a third show. As if that weren’t enough, the Foxboro Hot Tubs, a Green Day side-project band, dropped two shows in smaller venues, giving fans the chance to see Reverend Strychnine Twitch, er … Billie Joe Armstrong.
