.Best Killer Amateur Athlete

Tarah Murrey

Last season was the most successful in the history of Cal Women’s Volleyball, as the Bears shared Pac-10 championship honors and went all the way to the NCAA finals before losing to national powerhouse Penn State. Hopes are high in Berkeley for another deep post-season run in 2011, and for good reason: All-American outside hitter (and East Bay native) Tarah Murrey returns for her final season, providing the Bears with a formidable presence on the front line. Strong, agile, and court smart, the six-foot-three Murrey is a spiking machine; she had 5.2 “kills” per set last year, more than double the rate of any of her teammates. With the graduation of teammate and fellow All-American Carli Lloyd, Murrey goes from being the Bears’ scoring leader to being their leader, period. If you want to witness astounding athleticism (from great seats at a bargain price, incidentally) check out Murrey and the Bears at Haas Pavilion this fall.
