Given that the beer industry remains dominated by white men, you wouldn’t necessarily expect a brewery to host one of the most consistently diverse, welcoming, and queer-centered dance parties in the East Bay. Temescal Brewing, with its millennial pink walls and succulent-lined beer garden, pulls it off with its monthly event, Queer First Fridays. A DJ provides the beats, colorful lights create the nightlife vibe, and the beer keeps conversation fluid — and in the winter, a huge tent covers the whole outdoor area so everyone stays warm and dry. In just one year of throwing these parties, Queer First Fridays organizers have managed to develop a large and loyal following. One element working in its favor is that the brewery is located a nice distance away from the mayhem that can break out in Uptown on First Fridays — it’s close enough to access in mere minutes by bike or car, but belligerent passers-by aren’t accidentally wandering in, either.
