Trueburger

In-N-Out has built a reputation on the American burger, but who wants to drive to Pinole or the Oakland Airport when the craving strikes? Alongside Lake Merritt, Trueburger serves a gorgeous example of the American culinary hat trick: burger, fries, and a shake. Ground Angus beef, lettuce, tomato, and a garlic sauce (onions and pickles optional) are all executed to perfection. Lettuce keeps the juicy patty from coating the toasted bun and the sauce is complementary but not overpowering. The inevitable side order of fries is salty and crack under pressure, releasing steam from the soft center. Made from real ice cream, the shakes carry all of the clichés: thick, creamy, and a fresh flavor whether it’s plain vanilla or spiked with add-ins. Who could ask for a better meal? If you did get tired of it you could order a salad, but that’d be, well, un-American.
