While this deep East Oakland taqueria serves wonderful barbacoa and tacos, the top reason to head to Mi Zacatecas is the gorditas. These are a far, far cry from the deep-fried monstrosities you’ll find at Taco Bell. Instead, you’ll get an extra plump, fresh, made-to-order corn tortilla, cooked on the griddle, split open, and stuffed with any of an unusual variety of fillings — cactus stewed with pork, chicharron in red salsa, and rich lengua. (Yes, you could also just get chicken.) As opposed to the more common, fried masa style of gordita in other regions of Mexico, these lighter, fluffier gorditas stem from the rural state of Zacatecas. We’re not sure there’s a better way to spend $4 while simultaneously getting schooled on the diversity of Mexican cuisine in the entire Bay Area.
