Best Funky Joint Where You Can Still Drink Beer and Smoke

Schmidt's Tobacco Trading Co. and Pub

Imagine coming home and finding your parents have turned their living room into a beer and tobacco bar and you'd have The Pub, the easygoing, down-home establishment — and proud monument to bad habits — that's been on the Albany side of busy Solano Avenue since the mid-1980s. At The Pub, you can buy fine pipe and cigarette tobacco, along with handcrafted pipes to smoke it in or papers with which to roll your own. Once your pipe is full or cigarette rolled, you can sip a pint of one of half-dozen or so tap beers on sale. (There are even walking sticks for purchase, adding a flavor of a 19th-century Parisian cafe to the atmosphere.) Note that smoking is only allowed on the front patio or the cozy rear patio. The two main areas have comfortable couches and chairs for reading, bulling around with friends about the state of the world, or playing any one of more than a dozen board games. Or you can simply sit and stare on a sunny, sleepy weekend afternoon.
