Fela Kutchii, the DJ moniker of Amber Royal, started DJing four years ago after the dissolution of punk-inspired rap group Hot Tub, and her sets — at events thrown by Club Chai or Wine & Bowties, at the Women in Music Festival or Amor Digital, or in the back of a box-truck roving through the flatlands — are fittingly raucous. Since the Ghost Ship fire, she's also partnered with Lukas "Whatwhat" Smithey of storied underground party collective SPAZ on a series of outdoor parties advertised by word of mouth, and often energizes her events with incisive, snappy commentary on local politics. "Being from a punk background, I'm going to go maney as fuck," she recently told Wine & Bowties. "I have something to say. You can't ignore me. There's liberation in my music."
