A few months ago, TC Fried Chicken & Fish set up shop inside a run-of-the-mill doughnut shop on San Pablo Avenue, and the little hole-in-the-wall remains one of Berkeley's best-kept secrets. Disregard the fact that the place has more lotto machines than tables: While we dig Popeye's chicken as much as anyone (there's a branch right down the street), TC kicks things up a notch — mainly by serving fast food chicken that's, well, a little bit slow: You won't ever find more than a few pieces of chicken sitting in the display case, and that means your order is almost always going to be fried fresh to order. The results speak for themselves: TC's chicken is served up juicy and piping-hot, with a shatteringly crisp batter that's surprisingly low on grease. Bargain hunters take note: The $2.49 dark-meat special (for a thigh and a drumstick) is one of the best deals in town.
