Here's a riddle: What do you get when you combine a Crown City Rockers drummer with an in-demand DJ/remixer? Skins & Needles, of course, a duo that gets the party started with live drums, breaks, scratching, and mixing. Drummer Max MacVeety honed his chops with hip-hop band Crown City Rockers for a decade; he's opened for artists like Mos Def, Black Eyed Peas, Rakim, Blackalicious, and Spearhead, to name a few. Partner in crime DJ Zeph got his start break-dancing in his hometown of Santa Cruz, and his résumé includes projects with HBO and MTV. The two get around: They've played everywhere from The Independent to the Shattuck Down Low, New Parrish, Elbo Room, Boom Boom Room, and Coda. Skins & Needles aren't really a riddle — they're just two local boys mixing good old-fashioned booty-pumping jams. As MacVeety and Zeph say, "Man, woman, dog, child, alien — we have something for everyone."
