Even though the Bay Area has green spaces galore, there’s a dearth of good fertile dirt. Many urban gardeners have to buy their dirt, and the best place to go is American Soil and Stone. Opened 25 years ago in Berkeley and relocated to Richmond 8 years ago, the store has a wide array of dirt from Local Hero Veggie Garden to Super Grape Compost Mix, but the general consensus is that lilacs last in the dooryard bloom’d best in Walt Whitman Compost Mix. Besides dirt, the yard at American Soil and Stone is covered with rows of bins and buckets of cut and uncut, polished and rough rocks, decorative tiles, fancy garden appurtenances, slate and river rocks, zen fountains, and varied ground covers.
