There was a time where if you wanted fresh fruits and vegetables, you visited the local grocer or went straight to the source. But in the modern-day East Bay, it’s never so simple. We’re blessed with an abundance of options: grocery stores of every ilk, farmers’ markets on every corner, fruit stands on the side of the road. Or, if you want the food to come to you, CSA — or community-supported agriculture — boxes are offered by a variety of farms and other outfits. The Beet Box, sold by North Oakland food-justice organization Phat Beets, may be the best of the bunch. Weekly deliveries feature an abundance of widely varied, exceedingly fresh produce from a handful of organic and pesticide-free independent micro-farmers in Monterey and Fresno counties. Prices are kept lower than the competition through the use of neighborhood drop spots, so with Phat Beets you’ll do good, eat well, and save money in the process.
