The Uptown

Cheap tickets and booze and local lineups have made The Uptown in Oakland a top gathering spot for Bay Area rock music fans and musicians. The Uptown is part of an ongoing reawakening in the area of Downtown Oakland near where Telegraph Avenue meets Broadway. It’s no surprise that Green Day chose to debut its new album at the neighborhood landmark, whose stage also has seen the likes of Chuck D, Frank Black, The Germs, as well as local-boys-made-good High on Fire, The Lovemakers, and up-and-comers Thee Oh Sees. Owner Larry Trujillo countered the country’s arts and entertainment downturn with solid, local bands and free shows. Bands get paid less upfront, “but the goal is to please the typical music fan who just wants to go out and have a drink.” Mission accomplished.
