There are few things more important than feeding people in need. Alameda County Community Food Bank has been feeding the East Bay since 1985 as the central hub of a distribution network that reaches 275 nonprofit Alameda County agencies. In 2010 ACCFB distributed 20 million pounds of food, more than 50 percent in fresh fruits and vegetables. The food bank still gathers donated and surplus foods for redistribution, but as the volume of its work has increased — it serves one in six Alameda County residents, of which nearly half are children and teenagers — it has leveraged its size and efficiency (only 4 percent total overhead) to turn each donated dollar into five dollars of distributed food. ACCFB accepts food donations from individuals, manufacturers, grocers, and growers through its red donation barrels in select East Bay locations, or at its Oakland headquarters. You can also donate money through its web site, or volunteer your time at the food bank itself, helping gather and distribute nutritious food to the hungry.
