Every day, tourists and scholars from across the country arrive in Oakland’s Uptown to visit the famed marijuana college, Oaksterdam University. Founded in 2007 by activist Richard Lee, the for-profit, non-accredited school took its name from the nickname given to downtown Oakland’s pot shop district. Since then, a citywide crackdown has reduced the party to just four permitted dispensaries, yet Oaksterdam U thrives. In 2010, it dedicated a portion of its proceeds to funding Proposition 19, and news coverage helped solidify Oaksterdam into a now-global brand, alongside the actual Amsterdam and Vansterdam, Vancouver. No surprise then that Oaksterdam Gift Shop has all the schwag a tourist could ask for: Frisbee golf discs, weed T-shirts, hats, steel belt buckles that double as weed grinders, and, our favorites — green Oaksterdam Wayfarer sunglasses. Part of a constellation of properties that includes Oaksterdam University, a cannabis museum, Coffeeshop Blue Sky, and the Oaksterdam Glassworks, Oaksterdam Gift Shop doesn’t disappoint.
