There's some evidence that cannabidiol reduces stress and anxiety and can even be used to treat addiction and epilepsy. Better known as CBD, this non-psychoactive extract from the cannabis plant has lots of medical potential. That's why it's finding its way into an increasing array of tinctures, topicals, and edibles. Coffee seems to be the latest thing to get a CBD injection, but so far, Oakland's Bicycle Coffee appears to be the only cafe in the East Bay where you can sip CBD-infused brew. Bicycle makes brew using a CBD extract that's blended in, and the result is an iced beverage that tastes normal. Maybe it was only the placebo effect at work, but we felt a little less jittery and slightly more tranquil after a cup. Two caveats though: CBD has yet to pass through the barrage of medical studies that are used to prove a drug's effectiveness. It's also illegal under federal law. So, don't go drinking this stuff thinking it's a cure for pain. And be aware of the feds' ongoing war against all things cannabis.
