Purists may keel over from this proclamation, but the best cheese steak in town probably wouldn't cut it in Philadelphia, the home of the sandwich. In 2003, John Kerry drew criticism when he delicately ate a cheese steak that he had ordered with Swiss cheese. It may not be the reason he lost the presidential campaign, but if Swiss cheese was cause for concern among traditionalists, a cheese steak with Swiss and mushrooms would probably be considered a death sentence. At Rocky's, you won't find traditional Cheez Whiz on their sandwiches, but that doesn't mean they're not amazingly sinful. Meat that stays crispy despite being juicy and tender fills a toasted roll, and gooey Swiss holds thick slices of mushroom like boats on an oozing sea. The soft give and earthy flavors of the mushrooms are a nice contrast to the sharp onions, and without the bell peppers there's a balance between subtle and strong. Dive in and don't be afraid of getting messy: You're not running for president, and any droppings become perfect fodder for a side of fries.
