The East Bay is a bagel wasteland no longer. But of all the artisan purveyors to emerge last year, none has made the prospect of going out to breakfast as lovely and enticing as Beauty's Bagel Shop. Beauty's serves up dense, chewy, so-fresh-they-needn't-be-toasted Montreal-style bagels out of its wood-burning oven all morning and into the afternoon. But the bagels are just the start. Owners Blake Joffe and Amy Remsen, transplants from Pennsylvania, churn out consistently delicious dishes in decidedly West Coast fashion: with little pretension and superb ingredients. Anything that can be made in-house, is. There's an incredible level of detail, attention, and love brought to everything they serve, from old-school favorites like deviled eggs and chicken scrapple to a crispy chicken sandwich dripping with schmaltz. To boot, they serve Flying Goat coffee — rich, piping hot, and full-bodied — for only $1.75 a cup. Forget waiting for brunch. Beauty's is popular, but if there's a line, it moves fast. And with prompt service and a dining room flooded with natural light, you'll probably want to linger anyway.
