Best Bookstore for Offbeat Events

E.M. Wolfman General Interest Small Bookstore

While most Oakland bookstores regularly host readings and author meet-and-greets, E.M. Wolfman has become a destination for eclectic events that highlight young, up-and-coming artists and writers. The shop somehow manages to fit an art gallery into its downtown storefront, where it frequently hosts art shows, book release parties, workshops, and performances that one wouldn't normally expect to see at a bookstore. For instance, E.M. Wolfman was one of the outposts of the recent experimental sound art festival, Megapolis. The bookstore housed an installation called Convicted Contrast, which utilized interactive audio booths to reflect on the experience of being incarcerated. E.M. Wolfman has also taken its events off-site. It celebrated the release of Jacob Kahn's book of poems, A Circuit of Yields (which the bookstore published through its own small press), with a performance showcase and picnic at Berkeley's Lake Anza. E.M. Wolfman's ever-changing calendar gets updated with new happenings every week, so keeping up with them on Facebook is definitely worthwhile.
