Capri Lounge

Jimmie’s Entertainment Complex, the self-proclaimed “grown-folks club” popularly known as Sweet Jimmie’s, may be a thing of the past, but its spirit lives on at the Capri Lounge, where line-dancers doing the Electric Slide fill the floor, especially during Sunday-evening blues-jam sessions hosted by Billy and the Thrillers. The band, led by vocalist Billy Pigrum, has been an institution in the Hegenberger Road area on the airport side of I-880 for four decades. It may no longer boast a big horn section, but the band still features saxophonist Carl Green, one of the bootin’est tenor blowers in the Bay Area. Past jammers at the 225-capacity club, inconspicuously tucked away in an otherwise quiet business park, include vocalists Nat Bolden, Ella Pennewell, and Margie Turner, singing pianist Lady Bianca, singing guitarist Steve Gannon, singing bassist Bobby Reed, and drummer Frank Samuels. The Sunday jam begins at 6:30 p.m. There’s also a jazz jam at 8 p.m. on Thursdays, and Henry Clement brings in his zydeco and New Orleans R&B band on the first Friday of each month.
